Controller
Opportunity Overview
In this high-impact role, you will transcend the traditional Controller function to also provide leadership to the IT and HR departments and execute a corporate vision for growth. As a business partner and a key member of the leadership team, you will spearhead a variety of key initiatives including developing a SOX compliant environment, driving improvements in business performance reporting and managing capital initiatives.
Drawing from your managerial accounting expertise, you will not only grab the "low-hanging fruit" and implement cost controls to streamline the flow of accounting information and distill complex financials into succinct reports that facilitate executive decision-making, but also showcase your forward-thinking strategic orientation as you help support a major ERP implementation and drive financial best practices that will enable us to achieve our aggressive growth objectives.
While we are not at liberty to disclose our company name until you have been fully qualified, we are a multimillion dollar custom job shop that has earned a valuable reputation as the supplier of choice in one of the fastest-growing industries. We embrace an entrepreneurial spirit where creativity and self-motivation are highly regarded and if you're excited about playing an integral role in our success story by identifying key drivers, trends and operational metrics that will help us get and stay ahead of the curve, this may be the perfect role to give your ambition and talent maximum leverage.
What Else You'll Bring to the Table
In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting/Finance; CPA or MBA is a plus.
- 7+ years of accounting experience with at least 5 years as an accounting manager in a larger firm or a controller in a smaller firm;
- Manufacturing experience, preferably in a high-mix, low-volume job-shop environment.
- Experience with rapidly-growing companies with exposure to system conversions, process development and strategic planning; expertise in SOX 404 compliance is a plus.
- Leadership savvy to develop, manage, and lead people to create a high performing work group.
- Some experience or background with IT systems; prior experience with ERP implementation is a plus.
- Impeccable communication skills, both oral and written, to translate financial jargon into easy to understand reports and present to management.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Advanced proficiency in MS Office suite, especially Excel (must understand macros, pivot tables).
What's in It for You
- High impact -- you will not only oversee and develop accounting, IT and HR processes and systems, but you'll also have the opportunity to refine and improve these processes as we go along to ensure that these functions serve as a forward-looking strategic partner to the rest of the business.
- Growth opportunity -- this role will allow you to build upon your background as a Controller and take on a more executive focus as you drive vital business processes and directly interact with key players of our organization. These relationships and the growth you help us realize will in turn create opportunities for your own growth within our organization.
- Autonomy -- with plenty of support close at hand, we'll encourage you to think creatively and take ownership of your objectives.
- Great environment -- we are committed to building a brand in the labor market that labels us as "the company where the best people work". We have fostered a results-driven, team-oriented environment that has the motivation and high level support to bring your innovative ideas to life.
- Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary and bonus opportunity, we offer a comprehensive benefits package.
More About Your Role
This is a busy multifaceted role and as you come onboard, you'll be prepared to wear many "hats", shifting gears at a moment's notice and quickly come up with forward-looking plans that allow us to thrive in this high growth environment.
At a high level, you will spend about 80% of your time with the accounting/finance function; and the remaining 20% with IT and HR related activities. Your specific responsibilities are to:
- Provide insights into strategic and tactical decision-making processes (not limited to the Finance/Accounting function).
- Generate P&L Statements with emphasis on clearly communicating results to non-financial members of the management team & drive monthly and quarterly close processes supported by auditable reconciliations.
- Enhance and ensure the reliability of the accounting and control environment.
- Adhere to divisional/corporate reporting deadlines.
- Comply with all regulatory reporting and requests for information.
- Analyze internal and process costs, insure accurate product cost models.
- Develop and implement cost control procedures, streamline administrative processes and actively participate in cost-reduction efforts throughout the organization.
- Review and manage all Information Technology systems/Projects (including ERP) to effectively serve the IT needs of the organization.
- Supervise and develop department staff to meet ever-changing support needs from internal and external customers.
- Act as a key member of the leadership team as you review overall business results; assist in compiling forecasts; review and enact policy changes; prepare and deliver presentations/information to the corporate parent organization as requested.
Keys to Success
To excel in this role you will take a leadership approach to being the voice of finance in our company, sharing your expertise and engaging in constructive "back-and-forth" conversations with other leaders. In addition, in order to be an outstanding Controller, you will:
- Showcase high energy and zero complacency as you "wrap your arms around" the different moving parts of our business and drive to results.
- Take the initiative to identify opportunities, through your analyses, and bring them to the attention of the senior leadership team.
- Remain flexible and responsive to the demands inherent in a high-mix, low-volume production environment as you stay fluid with our ever changing needs and priorities.
- Interact effectively with people in all disciplines and at all levels of our organization, and develop and maintain collaborative relationships with others throughout the business.
Ultimately, your success will be measured based on our overall financial performance compared to budget, along with your ability to achieve a number of milestones, which we'll determine together, once you are on board. If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
